Sound the trumpets and clear some space in those dusty Jaguar history books; this, ladies and gentlemen, is the long-awaited Jaguar XF saloon concept. It’s the boldest car in decades to bear the Leaping Cat, the very first to show the design direction Jaguar has chosen for its best-selling models over the next decade, and a pretty good guide to the form of the S-type replacement due next autumn.
No British concept car of modern times has ever been so vital to a company’s future. Jaguar sales have flagged disastrously since 2000, and the outmoded styling of the first S-type, then the X-type and XJ has been mainly to blame. A new design team led by Ian Callum since 1999 has been working at top speed to produce a pure, distinctive Jaguar design style which can afford to ditch the outmoded styles of recent Jags, by having something equally distinctive to replace them with.
This XF study, to be unveiled in Detroit in a few days’ time, displays in three dimensions many of the decisons the company has made about its future. The XF concept shows the traditional cat-like stance and the confidently sweeping lines of Jaguars are all still there — in spades. There are even discreet references to Jaguar traditions in some of the body creases and the shapes around the lights.
But this is a confident, all-new car. Indeed, it could be fairly described as the first post-Lyons Jaguar saloon. The challenge for its designers, says Callum, was to take Jaguar where it would now be, had the evolutionary sequence of superb Jaguar saloons leading up to the 1970s XJ6 not dissolved into a series of retro designs. "Think of the XF as the Jaguar Mk2 of the future," said Callum. “Any good car has to have a visual heritage; it has to come from somewhere. But we’re just not interested in retro designs any more."
Autocar understands that the size and “sense” of the concept is very much that of the new production replacement for the S-type, which itself is based on brilliantly developed underpinnings of the outgoing model. Adjust the windscreen rake for a roof a couple of inches higher, shape the nose and tail more practically for a life in the traffic, insert the kind of cabin styling a Jag buyer expects and you have the new production XF saloon.
Specifically, the XF’s concept’s face says a lot about Jaguar fronts in future. There is an inset “square” Jaguar grille, quite different from but influenced by the inset grille of the first XJ6. “You’ll see this new front face on a new production models quite soon,” says Callum.

We just showed you a whole gallery full of images of the upcoming Jaguar C-XF concept that is so important to the future of Jaguar. The concept will be seen in the flesh for the first time in Detroit next week, but we hope you're like us and wonder what the "production version" will look like when the new XF (formerly known as the S-Type) finally filters down to the showroom floor. Well thanks to those shutterbugs at KGP Photography, we have a few glimpses at what the future holds. Although the front and rear of this test mule are heavily cloaked, you can see lights, grille and overall shapes from this series of spy photos. And the whole side is relatively naked, showing off the more conventional door handles and smoothed body panels that most expected.
One big difference seems to be the more traditional roofline of the near-production version under the cladding. Closer to a CLS than the C-XF show car, this raised roof should help taller back seat passengers feel more comfortable sitting upright. As we reported previously, the new XF will not use aluminum in its construction to help speed up the production development process and cut costs. The interior should mimic the XK's cockpit, and engines will also be familiar, with the XF-R (?) getting the XKR's 420-bhp supercharged V8. A six-speed automatic also will be standard across the entire model range

This is the XF saloon, under heavy disguise, caught just as it left Jaguar's technical centre at Whitley, Coventry earlier this week. The four-door S-type replacement is still a year from UK showrooms, which explains why the cladding on the car's nose and tail is so extensive. However, even through the disguise, you can clearly recognise the C-XF concept's near-square, inset radiator grille, distinctive headlights, curved rump, moulded exhaust pipes and hockey-stick taillight design.
Elsewhere on the car, it's difficult to see how many of the C-XF's signature design cues are on this production mule. Take a look at the car's body side in our gallery and you'll see the C-XF's deeply-set 'light-catcher' line, just below the doors, is in evidence; its hidden door handles and shrunken door mirrors aren't. Expect the evocative wing vents behind the front wheels to feature on the production car, since they're becoming a recurrent theme in both Jaguar and Land Rover design, but since they're covered up on this mule, confirmation of that will have to wait until later.
Under the skin, the S-type replacement is likely to use refined and developed mechanicals derived from those of the current car, rather than an all-new platform. That means it'll be steel, rather than aluminium, similar in its exterior and interior dimensions to the current car, and feature developments of the current car's four-strong engine range, with the possible addition of the new 3.6-litre V8 diesel later in the model's life, after it has been included under the bonnet of the current XJ limousine.

"The XF is the first of a series of new cars under development that will see all three Jaguar saloons replaced by the end of the decade. A new XJ – apparently even more radical than the XF – will follow in 2009, while the rumoured Land Rover Freelander-based crossover vehicle to replace X-Type is still coming, said Jaguar executives at the show. “Our future is even more exciting than the XF,” said Callum."
XJ: uber limo
XK: sports GT coupe and convertible
XF: luxury family saloon
