Subaru unveils brand new Legacy



Looking at the 2005 Subaru Legacy will tell you a whole bunch of things all at once. This is the coming of age of Subaru - a gigantic leap forward in almost every way imaginable. With the introduction of a host of new features, technologies, this once almost average looking sedan and wagon combination gains the power and the presence amongst the competition. Straight out of the heart of Japan, this is CarBC.com's in depth preview of the all-new Legacy.



On the outside, it is clear that the Legacy has gone through countless lessons in finishing school. Though the tough as nails facial expression remains on every single model on the lineup, it portrays power, strength, and if you've got an eye for mean cars, beauty. Bulge lines up and down the hood demonstrate the potential and power within, and if what they say about eyes being a window to the soul, the Legacy is certainly a purposeful automobile. Smoothened front and rear bumpers establish a clean, and uncluttered look around the front end, and bright projection beam fog, and headlights are a part of the new look. Much of the original's characteristics have been preserved with the new model; pillarless windows, and thin pillars all around. It's a nice, clean look that is both Subaru and Japanese.



Subaru has chosen to power the new Legacy with an array of motors, some well-established, and some new to the international front. Except for the most luxurious models, all start out with the basic 2.5 liter horizontally opposed four cylinder engine. To keep it running fresh, and with the crowd, variable valve timing has been added to increase power, torque and fuel efficiency. For those who like it hot, Subaru will be offering the very successful B4 yet again. It takes the same 2.5 liter flat four, and turbochargers it to provide a rush of power that approaches 300 horsepower, equaling the WRX STi for thrills in a larger package. Finally comes the relatively new flat-6 engine, which made its debut just a few short years ago. Though not as powerful as the turbocharged H-4, it reigns supreme in smoothness. It will be featured on the H-6 model of the new Legacy. The automatic transmission has gained an extra ratio bringing it up to five speeds.



These engines are combined with the proven Subaru tradition of all wheel driven chassis. The new generation of Legacy follows up with a simple, yet effective setup that has McPherson struts up front, while a re-tuned four-link, multi-link setup in back. With fewer gears, clutch plates, gizmos and gadgets, the full time all wheel drive. The claim that Subaru makes is that the Legacy will be more predictable on uneven surfaces, or when the weather is less than perfect. Handling is promised to be more neutral than before. Of course, this has been proven in other previous generations of Legacy as well as other models.


The last stop in this preview is of course, the interior. In previous previews, you've heard me comment on how drab, and gray they look. There was never anything wrong with the quality of the materials they've used, it just looked so boring and bland. Subaru have changed this, by spending time in the driver's seat. Amongst the changes are a set of new, white, blue and red gauges, a small yet grippy three-spoke steering wheels, supportive sporty seats, steering wheel mounted switches for the automatic transmission, and lager storage spaces and cubby holes. The wagon also fights back against new competitors such as the new Accord Tourer with cargo hauling ability that's simply amazing.


With a set of new engines, and a dramatically improved interior, proven ride and handling the Legacy is more prepared to tackle the increasingly competitive mid-sized sedan market. In basic form it not only appears to be able to take to the road better than the Camry, Accord or even Mazda6, but even against smaller prestige sedans such as the Volvo S40 and the Audi A4. As for the final word, we'll have to drive them first, before we can make any final decisions but we are definitely looking forward to it…

Din fata e mai expresiva si mai bine realizata ca Impreza.In plus vad ca o ia pe urmele lui Mitsubishi cu turbina din Ti. Motorul ala de 2.0 si 190 cp....hmm masine e prea grea pentru asa ceva...
