2010 Audi A6 First to Receive New Aluminum Steel Space Frame

Consistent with the previously leaked Audi Roll Out Schedule Until 2012 document, the next generation C7 Audi A6 is set to be unveiled in 2010 for the 2011 model year. With the established Audi grille and new headlamps with eye-catching LED daytime running lamps already certified, the overall A6 body design seems to confirm initial worries that it will end up looking like an enlarged Audi A4.

Despite the lightly evolved design, the new A6 under the skin is just the opposite with a new construction method resulting in 50% body shell weight loss and 50% increased rigidity. Car Online spoke with Audi chief strategist and reports the A6 will be the first model to introduce the new body structure which incorporates both steel and aluminum materials.

Similar to the ASF (Aluminum Space Frame) body construction seen in the low volume R8, TT and A8 models, the new A6 will receive this hybrid body of steel and aluminum, dubbed ASF II, consisting of an all aluminum passenger cell with steel/foam reinforcements. The front nose and rear tail sections will also be reinforced with compact and lightweight subframes which are currently being developed. As any metallurgist knows, aluminum and steel do not mate well, however, advancements in bonding techniques and epoxy resins make it possible resulting in streamlined production, top build quality and cost savings.

After the A6, the ASF II system will be introduced in the A8 and new A7. However, the challenge for Audi engineers will be applying the technology to its smaller cars. Audi engineers are currently exploring how alloys can be used on the Mk2 A3 and upcoming A1.

Clearly the advantages of a lighter vehicle are most evident in improved handling, fuel economy and reduced emissions. For example, applying the ASF II to the heavy Q7 SUV could save as much as 300 kg. However, Audi needs to be more competitive in the handling department and this ASF II system puts them one step closer to narrowing that gap between its German rear-wheel-drive brothers, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.

iar apar tot felul de cgi faine si cind apare modelul de serie e dezamagitor. ca si A4. in afara de "farurile alea de zi" in rest e banal rau. si ce cgi agresive aparusera.

e o masina reusita, chiar faina, doar ca deja Audi risca sa intre in banal cu formele astea.
mai bine ceva controversat, dar iesit din comun.

N-o sa vezi ceva iesit din comun de la audi, cel putin nu A4 / A6 sau A8. De la Audi 80, respectiv Audi 100 au fost doar face-lift-uri, nicio generatie n-a fost modificata radical fata de precedenta. As zice ca schimbarea cea mai mare a fost grila din fata la actualul A6, ala-i cel mai curajos lucru pe care l-au putut face. Pe de alta parte, masinile arata bine si se vand bine, deci nu prea au motiv sa riste schimbari radicale.

Mie'mi place cum arata A6'le asta. E drept ca nu pare decat un facelift, insa apare mai agresiv ... si ptr mine, e de ajuns.

Next Generation 2012 Audi A6 (C7) Test Mule Spied in Romania

A quick shout out to WCF reader Teg, for sending us a tip about the next generation Audi A6 mule caught testing in Romania. The C7 A6 is rumored to be released January 2011, if Audi is still sticking to the previously leaked Roll Out Schedule.

Teg's net friends at clubaudi.ro spotted the A6 mule in Iasi, Romania, where the car tends to make a local home at the Continental Engineering Centre before being sent off to other facilities.

The C7 A6 should get the next generation Aluminum Steel Space Frame, which will help the car shed a significant amount of weight, while increasing rigidity by nearly 50%. This will improve performance, and likely decrease fuel consumption.

PREVIEW: Noul Audi A6

Fotografii spion au reusit sa surprinda pentru prima data un prototip complet necamuflat al noii generatii A6.

Noul Audi A6 preia elemente de design de la noile A7 si A5 Sportback, atat profilul dinamic, apropiat de cel al unui coupe, cat si stilul partii posterioare fiind ”mostenite” fara moficari notabile de la nava amiral A8.

La baza noului Audi A6 va sta platforma modulara MLB, platforma pe care sunt bazate A4, A5 si Q5 in varianta sa din otel si A8 in varianta din aluminiu. In cazul lui A6 si A7 sasiul este realizat in proportie de 20% din aluminiu pentru a reduce greutatea, dar fara a creste semnificativ costurile. Astfel noua generatie promite sa fie cea mai dinamica de pana acum, propulsoarele putand fi montate mai aproape de centrul masinii.

La lansare, paleta de motorizari a noului sedan de clasa mare Audi va cuprinde propulsoare pe benzina V6 si V8, printre care noul 3.0 TDI, dar si V8-ul pe benzina de 4.2 litri. Viitorul RS6 va avea sub capota acelasi V10 FSI de 5.0 litri, prezent si pe R8.

Lansarea oficiala a noului Audi A6 va avea loc la Salonul Auto de la Geneva din luna martie a anului viitor, ulterior fiind asteptate versiunea break si S6.

Aha, și când spuneam că toate mașinile arată la fel de la mic la mare, mi-a sărit lumea în cap. Identitate de marcă dusă la extrem dă în penibil. Desigur că asta înseamnă costuri mai mici de la an la an, dar sărăciile nu se ieftinesc deloc.

Mașini proiectate pe calculator cu doar câteva luni de teste, cu piese împrumutate pe 3-4 modele sau chiar mai multe, între mărci eventual. O abordare cam tristă pentru noi. Poate un avantaj ar fi introducerea printre opționale a unor dotări de serie superioară, dacă ai noroc. Mai nou se zice că la Skoda nu va mai fi așa de exemplu.

Nu imi place. Au cam pierdut inspiratia la design, dupa ce au facut A8-ul nou un fel de A4 mai mare (si destul de fad la design fata de concurenta sa, desi tehnic e o masina foarte interesanta), acuma fac A6-le un fel de A8 la scara mai mica... Avind in vedere design-ul foarte reusit si personal, specific, al celor de la BMW cu noua Serie 5, si al celor de la Merc cu E-Class, cred ca Audi va avea destule probleme in competitia asta (la fel e cu A8-ul actual, e foarte buna tehnic masina, dar oamenii prefera competitorii pe motive subiective).

Poate or vrea special sa faca A6-le destul de fad dpdv design ca sa impinga unii clienti spre A7?! Nu ca A7 mi-ar placea in mod deosebit, dar inteleg ca unora le place.

Dupa mine, ultima masina frumoasa lansata de cei de la Audi a fost A5/S5/RS5 si A5/S5 sportback.

After months of anticipation, Audi has officially unveiled the 2012 A6 Avant.

Designed to battle the BMW 5-Series Touring and Mercedes E-Class Estate, the Avant features a dynamic design with a bold front fascia, a sloping roofline and an elegant rear end. Despite being larger than the outgoing model, the car weighs up to 70 kg (154 lbs) less than its predecessor thanks to an aluminum-intensive chassis and a lightweight body.

Inside, the cabin is elegantly appointed with premium materials, a wrap-around dashboard and driver-oriented controls. Notable options include a head-up display, heated / ventilated front seats, MMI navigation plus (with internet connectivity) and a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system.

In terms of practicality, the boot holds 565 liters (19.95 cu ft) of luggage but that can be expanded to 1,680 liters (59.33 cu ft) when the rear seats are folded down. Additionally, similar to the VW Passat, the A6 wagon offers an optional remote boot opening system which is activated by waving your foot under the rear bumper.

At launch, five engines will be available. Petrol choices include a naturally-aspirated 2.8 FSI V6 with 150 kW (204 PS) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque as well as a 3.0 TFSI V6 with 220 kW (300 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque.

On the diesel side, the entry-level 2.0 TDI produces 130 kW (177 PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. The 3.0 TDI V6 is available with 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) or 180 kW (245 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. Eventually, a third version of the 3.0 TDI will be offered with 230 kW (313 PS).

Depending on which engine is selected, it is paired to a six-speed manual, a seven-speed S tronic, a CVT multitronic or an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. Furthermore, entry-level models come with front-wheel drive while quattro all-wheel drive is optional.

Set to go on sale later this summer, the A6 Avant will be priced from €40,850 in Germany.
